Heal & Demilitarize Pu'uloa

Random pics (not in order, sorry) from our latest "Music 4 da People" event at Blaisdell Park. Kahuli performance, Uncle George's puppet show, Ho'okupu to Ka'ahupahau, keiki ringing Hiroshima Peace Bell...it was a great event, with an awesome mix of Kahuli 'ohana & passers-by in attendance! Mahalo to everyone who came or kept us in your hearts. Aloha!

A'ala Park January 13

ʻAʻala Park
Brenda & Darlene ROCKED! (& Noa too...)
It was great to hang out & listen to them.  Kahuli got a late start (we're named ater a snail, ok?), but it went pretty good!  We were joined by Noa & blessed by the beautiful dancers of Na Hula Ola i ke Ao.  Special guests for the day included Sean (Heifara) of Aloha Liberation Front (a Kahuli predecessor band) & Poka Laenui, who walked from his radio show to check us out.  Mahalo!

Park residents wrote us requests on scrap paper, which we gave our best shot (never did "Red red Wine" before - e kala mai!!)

and even joined us to jam a bit afterward.

We were also visited by HPD, but were able to finish on Kahuli time!

Mahalo nui to everyone who helped make this happen!!!

Music 4 da People Tour: Manaʻo

In the spirit of Makahiki, Kahuli is hosting a monthly event (2nd Saturday of each month, at least for now) to celebrate our beautiful ʻaina & play "for da people", wherever they may be! This manaʻo comes from many sources: 1) it is a continuation of the "run da ʻaina" musical activism made famous by late great warriors such as Kawaipuna & Kamakahukilani; 2)it is a blessing in action -- the clockwise circling of our home island, Oʻahu, with music & our prayers for peace, Aloha ʻAina, and demilitarization; and 3)the club scene is not really our thing, anyway! We want to create something fun, free, ʻohana-friendly, community-building, & centered in Aloha ʻAina & positive change. For each event, we will try to feature a special guest & hold an open jam afterward for whoever wants to stay & play. Bring your own instruments, something to sit on, and whatever you would like to share -- food, info, songs, whatevas. We will post upcoming locations as they are planned. Mahalo!

James Nakapa'ahu's Memorial

Kahuli members Pete & Ikaika back up Palani Vaughn (no, the guitar did not sound that loud in the actual mix). Also includes a tiny clip of Pete, Ikaika & Laulani playing with Jon Osorio & Leon Siu. The best music was after this...good fun, for a really great warrior of Aloha. We love you Uncle James!!

Here's a documentary from today:

And some pictures, too!

Stay tuned!

E Ho'omau!

Kahuli's CD effort keeps on keepin' on...slowly but surely...into the Year of the Ox!

Today we experimented with recording scenarios in Ikaika's office (the old Honolulu Magazine building, formerly an old Chinese bank). To keep Kapono's drums from ricocheting off the ceiling, we had to hide him under a rug from Laulani's car (found dumped outside of Kapono's apartment, btw). Pete laid a beautiful guitar track for "Moku o O'ahu", and Marion did vocal and guitar tracks on "Bumbye". Gong Hee Fat Choy!
